Guiding principles

Role

The Canadian Podiatric Medical Association (CPMA) has been the national voice for podiatric medicine in Canada since 1926. As a non-profit professional organization, the CPMA represents and supports licensed podiatrists across the country — Canada’s leading experts in diagnosing, treating, and preventing foot and ankle conditions.

Mission

The CPMA advances and advocates for the specialty of podiatric medicine and surgery, supporting its members and enhancing public health. We aim to serve as the authoritative national voice for podiatrists in Canada, contributing to the development of national standards and advancing the practice, education, research, and professionalism of podiatry.

Vision

To ensure that podiatrists across Canada are recognized as essential providers of foot and ankle care, thereby contributing to the overall health and well-being of all Canadians.

Values

The CPMA upholds strong professional values and high standards of practice, promoting public awareness of lower-limb health. Our shared values include integrity, civility, and respect. We are committed to patient-centred, evidence-based care and foster collaboration with other healthcare professionals to enhance overall health outcomes.

Commitment

Together with our members, partners, and stakeholders, the CPMA is committed to strengthening the profession, promoting ongoing professional development, and enhancing foot health for all Canadians.

National advocacy

At the national level, the CPMA collaborates with federal and provincial agencies to advocate for the profession’s interests in legislation, health policy, and insurance coverage. We advocate for fair recognition of podiatric medicine within Canada’s healthcare system, contribute to national standards of practice, and work with other medical associations to ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care.

The association also partners with the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA) to support fair and consistent coverage for podiatric services nationwide.

Global collaboration

Internationally, the CPMA represents Canada within a global network of professional organizations, including the Fédération Internationale des Podologues (FIP), the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), and the Royal College of Podiatry (UK). Through these partnerships, we help shape the future of podiatric medicine by contributing to international standards, advancing research and education, and promoting global collaboration among professionals.
